Rail transport
Oulu is an important junction in the country's rail network. South-, east-
and north-bound tracks meet here. Finland's dense freight traffic network serves
both domestic and international transportation needs with great efficiency. Oulu
has one of Finland's foremost terminals for combined transportation modes. The
new terminal will be completed right next door to Oulu's main harbour. The new
transverse rail track in Russian Karelia opens up Russia's huge track network.
Finland and Russia share the same gauge in their railways and crossing the border
is a speedy process not requiring transfer loading of freight.
